How to Measure Your Kitchen for New Cabinets

Good measurements are how a cabinet order ends up fitting the room. You don't need to be a pro: rough numbers, a sketch and a few photos are enough for Top Drawer Cabinetry to send a free 3D design and a line-item quote in 24–48 hours. After you approve the quote, a free onsite measure checks every number in the real room before anything is ordered.

The checklist

Seven things to write down. Measure in inches.
  1. Sketch the room

Draw the kitchen from above: every wall, the window and door openings, and the island if there is one. It doesn't need to be to scale — it's where the numbers go.
  2. Measure each wall in inches

Measure corner to corner along every wall that will get cabinets. Walls aren't always straight, so measure each one at a couple of heights and write down the smallest number.
  3. Mark the windows and doors

For each one, note how far it is from the nearest corner and how wide it is, trim included. For a window, add how high the sill sits off the floor.
  4. Mark the plumbing, gas and electrical

Note where the sink's water lines and drain come out of the wall, where the range's gas line or outlet is, and any outlets and switches on the cabinet walls.
  5. List the appliances and their widths

Refrigerator, range or cooktop, wall oven, dishwasher, microwave and hood. Take each width from its spec sheet, or measure the opening if the appliance is staying.
  6. Measure the ceiling height

It decides how tall the wall cabinets can go. Ours come 30″, 36″ and 42″ high, plus short stacked cabinets that sit on top (White Shaker only).
  7. Take photos

One straight-on photo of each wall, plus any soffits, bulkheads or odd corners. Photos catch things a sketch misses.

From measurements to a cabinet list

Cabinets come in set widths — our base cabinets 9″ to 36″ wide in 3″ steps and wall cabinets 9″ to 36″wide — so each wall is filled with a mix of widths, and a filler closes whatever is left. You don't have to do that math: the free 3D design lays out every cabinet for you, so you see the kitchen before you buy. To look the sizes up yourself, see our kitchen cabinet sizes guide — and for a bathroom, the vanity sizes.

What to send us

Any one of these is enough to start: plans, a cabinet list, your measurements or photos of the room. Send it through the free quote form or call (602) 920-4005. Homeowners are welcome, and there's no minimum order.

We check it before you order

Once you approve the quote, a free onsite measure checks the numbers against the real room, so the order matches the kitchen before it's placed. Then pick the cabinets up at our Phoenix warehouse (Mon–Fri 8–4) or have them delivered, flat-pack or assembled. We don't install — the install is up to you or your installer — and how an order works covers the rest, from pickup to delivery day.

Measuring for cabinets — FAQ

Do I need exact measurements to get a quote?

No. Rough measurements, a sketch or a few photos are enough for a free 3D design and a quote in 24–48 hours. After you approve the quote, a free onsite measure checks every number in the real room before the order is placed.

Do you come out and measure?

Yes. Once you approve the quote, we do a free onsite measure to check the numbers against the room before anything is ordered.

What if my wall doesn't match the cabinet widths?

Cabinet widths step by 3 inches, so a wall often lands between sizes. Fillers close the gap, and the free 3D design works out the widths and fillers for you.

What should I send for a quote?

Any one of these is enough to start: plans, a cabinet list, measurements or photos of the room. You'll get a free 3D design and a line-item quote in 24–48 hours.

Do you install cabinets?

No, we don't install. The only services we offer are assembly and delivery: order your cabinets flat-pack (RTA) or assembled by us, then pick them up at our Phoenix warehouse or have them delivered. The install is up to you or your installer.

Can homeowners order cabinets from you?

Yes. Homeowners are welcome, with no account and no minimum order needed. Send your measurements or photos and we'll take it from there.
